NATURAL CREATIVITY

Jon & Anthony Gregg

are cousins that come from a family of traditional artists and craftsmen spanning back for many generations, this may explain their instinctive will to create. In childhood the two would sit and draw on the same sheet of paper, usually competing to see who could produce the most imaginative work. Only in adulthood did they learn not to compete, but work together, combining their skills and creativity to produce stunning original art.

Their ability to allow each piece to evolve almost as if it is creating itself expresses their need to work with purely natural mediums, stone, wood, crystal etc., which then suggests its own final form. Using such primeval material creates an emotion whilst carving and working transfers itself to those seeing and touching the medium. They believe this is the most natural form of art.

They subscribe to the theory that if we are products of our own environment, we therefore need to redress the balance by reducing the artificiality of the materials in our everyday life. Even what appears as stone is probably reconstituted, wood products are now veneered and comprised to maximise output, having only a finite lifespan in our throw away society. If there is a lesson in their work it is about overlooking what is around us, and the unlimited potential of the Earth's precious natural resources.

So by buying or commissioning a piece of the Greggs work you will have an amazing object of art to display. Their integrity in only recycling materials (for instance dead, fallen timber and off cuts from industrial slate quarries) can only add to the timeless appeal of their work.
